Our Story

Hendersons has a long history and a great story to be told!

The building was built more than 100 years ago, originally to be used as a school, in its early days, it was also temporarily used as a clinic or hospital during the rebellion. This was evident when old medicine bottles and ink bottles were found when lifting the original wooden floors. It was known as the “Pienk Skool” primary school until the mid-seventies and then rented out as storage, offices, etc.

The property was thereafter bought by Sam & Martha Henderson (original owners of the WIMPY Restaurant next door) and development of Hendersons Country Lodge started. The first two rooms were completed and rented out in 1996.

Management has since been taken over by the second generation of Hendersons, with 10 years’ experience in the hospitality industry.

Today it embraces the essence of luxury living: 6 spacious en-suite rooms with modern finishes, white percale linen and HD TVs. It has since been renamed to Hendersons Lodge, where comfort and style take precedence!
The small town of Senekal has a few hidden gems, including one of the oldest churches in the Free State. The church is fenced with petrified wood, originally excavated from nearby farms. Other places of interest around Senekal include Biddulphs Mountain Reserve and Willem Pretorius Game Reserve.

Climate: The Free State enjoys warm to hot summer months, with most rainfall during this time. The winters are sunny, but cold and dry. The temperature drops considerably in the evenings.

In 2018 the next phase was launched, known as The Lounge Coffee shop, situated in what used to be the school hall. Exceptional coffee and light meals are served 6 days a week in a tranquil and stylish setting. Free WIFI is also available throughout the lodge.

Salon Eloise can now also be found at Hendersons, where a variety of hair treatments are available – bookings essential.

The latest addition to the property is Biltong Inc. Johan and Samantha (Henderson) Nortje opened the doors of their new shop in December 2020. They specialise in original recipe biltong, droëwors and some fresh meat products. Don’t pass through Senekal without popping in for something for the road.
